Pelud and Carson writes:

Afghanistan, Albania, Argentina, Australia.

That’s where the latest crop of New York City police officers comes from.

Also Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize and Bosnia, along with some 50 other countries.

The 1,359 police cadets who graduated in yesterday’s ceremony at Madison Square Garden included 284 immigrants, who hailed from a record number of 58 nations , including Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador and Egypt, police officials said.

…Several of the officers became citizens only a few months before entering the police academy, like Phat It, who was born in a refugee camp in Thailand after his family fled Cambodia.

Bamboo Clothing

December 27, 2006 · 1 Comment

Albania has many remote areas which are virtually untouched, meaning they are clean and pollution free. However, this is not the case for most Albanian cities which are generally suffering from high pollution levels.

There is a lot of water, air, and soil pollution, often from steel works and other factories from the communist era. A lot of recent pollution has been due to the rapid increase in the number of cars in Albania. Before the fall of communism, there were few cars in Albania but now there are many. The cars are often old and are not very fuel efficient. Plus the petrol used in Albania contains lead and give off many highly dangerous emissions.

It is important that Albania starts looking at taking care of its environment. Sustainable development and renewable energy souces should be priority. If they are looking for sustainable argiculture, they could consider bamboo. Bamboo can be grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other toxic chemicals. It grows quickly and can be made into many products such as bamboo clothing, bamboo flooring, bamboo towels, bamboo furniture, and bamboo homewares.

The environmental benefits of bamboo clothing are numerous. Bamboo plants are very quick growers and do not require fertilisers or pesticides for a successful crop. They also require very little water and they can survive drought conditions as well as flooding. Bamboo is a sustainable and renewable resource as the bamboo plant is self replenishing. New shoots are continuously growing, ready to replace the old ones.

Another benefit of bamboo is that it releases a significant amount of oxygen into the atmosphere, more so than trees. Planting bamboo can help reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the air as well as reducing soil erosion and desertisation. The complex root system of bamboo plants makes them an excellent choice for planting in high erosion areas such as riverbanks and areas subject to mud slides. They are also suitable for planting in areas which have suffered significant soil degradation and deforestation.
